A tribute to Charley Pride

Today’s blog theme is dedicated to the exceptionally talented musician Mr Charley Pride who died yesterday (12 December 2020) due to complications related to COVID-19.

Charley was born on 18 March 1934 in Mississippi. He was part of a large family – the fourth of eleven children – and showed a passion for both music and baseball at a young age.

After serving in the army and working at a smelting plant, he turned his attention to music and had an incredibly successful career.

A staggering 52 of his songs were top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart and he was the first black inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

We’re not colour-blind yet, but we’ve advanced a few paces along the path and I like to think I’ve contributed something to that process.

Charley Pride

Just over a month ago, on 11 November, Charley was on stage performing at the 54th Country Music Association Awards in Nashville. He was awarded the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in what was his last ever public performance.

He graciously accepted the award in a very courteous speech, and it is unbelievable to think he is no longer here.

For those of you reading this who don’t know his music, please have a listen! I would recommend starting with my three favourites:

  • Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’
  • Before I Met You
  • Someone Loves You Honey

Rest in peace, Mr Pride. The music industry was so much better off with you in it. I know you’ll be missed by all those who knew you.

My thoughts are with Charley’s family, friends, colleagues and fans who are all in mourning at this time.
