Back in 2019, country singer Luke Combs released his album, ‘What You See is What You Get’. I loved every song and since then I’ve been waiting impatiently for new songs from Luke to listen to. If you haven’t heard his songs, I urge you to listen (even those who are adamant they don’t like country music)!
I was over the moon when Luke announced he was releasing a deluxe version of the album on 23 October 2020 entitled ‘What You See Ain’t Always What You Get’. This version contains six extra songs since the 2019 version. I’ve written a review of the new songs here.
Enjoy and stay musical.
Six Feet Apart
This song was actually released earlier this year as a single and is about the coronavirus pandemic. The words are so touching and really speak to millions of people around the world. It’s a song people need to hear and whilst it won’t change things, it gives you three minutes to realise people are feeling the same and we’re all going through this together.
“There will be light after dark, someday when we aren’t six feet apart.”
Cold as You
Listening to this song makes me smile – as it always does when an artist I love releases new music. ‘Luke Combs is back,’ I say as I hear his signature vocals. A catchy song that instantly makes you sing along.
“This broke heart fool on an old bar stool, drinking beer almost as cold as you.”
The Other Guy
A typical country song: the lyrics are a story that plays out in your imagination. You can really feel his pain in this song. This song is the epitome of why I love country music.
“It might look like I’m doing alright, but you should see the other guy.”
My Kinda Folk
A signature Luke Combs’ song. It makes me yearn for the time when I went to concerts. As I close my eyes and tap my feet to this tune, I imagine I’m at a concert watching Luke live. Let’s hope this can happen really soon…
“There oughta be a law against working this hard and still having this much fun.”
Without You (with Amanda Shires)
I’m not sure if this is an autobiographical song, but it definitely feels authentic. It pulls at the heartstrings. The words are just perfect for that special someone who has supported you and loved you through the good times and bad.
“Me don’t mean a thing without you.”
Forever After All
Definitely my favourite song out of the new additions. I think I’ve listened to it 100 times already! It’s got the whole package to be a classic song at weddings. Another example of the genius songwriting style of Luke. I’ll probably listen to it 100 times again before tomorrow!
“They say nothing lasts forever, but they ain’t seen us together.”
In conclusion:
This deluxe version, with the extra six songs is a great piece of artistry and it is making me want Luke to keep releasing more and more songs!
