I decided to treat myself to another musical instrument this weekend… the Kalimba (a modern day version of the African Mbira) caught my eye and it arrived today.
I have been driving my family mad with tuning it and practising it with it today, but I’m really impressed with this portable and modest instrument.
So far I’ve played Happy Birthday on it (so I can annoy my sister on her birthday next week!) and in the next few weeks I’ll keep on trying to learn as many songs as I can.
In all seriousness though, I do love learning about the history of music, especially in different cultures.
Coming from an Italian family, I just have to hear a second of the accordion playing and I’m transported back to my childhood – either to my grandparents’ home or spending time with family in Italy.
So I understand the connection between certain types of music and different cultures. My aim for the rest of the year is to find out more about musical instruments I’ve never heard of… what do you suggest I start with after the Kalimba?
All suggestions welcome!
