EP review: Rascal Flatts – How They Remember You

I admit that I’m still upset about the news that Rascal Flatts are soon to be no more after 20 years together. I know it’s trivial considering everything going on now, but I can’t help but feel disappointed. I should feel grateful that I saw them live back in 2014 at Country 2 Country at the O2 in London, but a dream of mine was to go and see a Rascal Flatts concert in America. I wish I could see them one last time… what a concert that would be!

I was over the moon when their new EP How They Remember You was released on Friday (31 July).

Here is my review on this EP. I hope you enjoy it.

Stay musical.

How They Remember You

The words in this song make me tear up every time I listen to it. This song is the epitome of why I love country music so much. The profound lyrics and Gary’s amazing vocals really make you think about what’s important in life and asks the question, how do you want to be remembered when the inevitable happens?

It inspires you to go for your dreams if you’ve let them slide and it instils good old-fashioned values of taking responsibilities for your actions and doing the right thing.

“It ain’t a question of if they will, it’s how they remember you.”

Feel it in the Morning

Classic Rascal Flatts style. From the first second, it makes you want to get up and dance. I listened to it with a smile on my face for the whole 3 minutes and 13 seconds.

“I know I couldn’t sleep it off even if I tried.”

Quick, Fast, in a Hurry

A cool, modern song with the beautiful vocals of Rachel Wammack which complements Gary, Jay and Joe Don.

“Say that you need me right now and I’ll be right there.”

Looking Back

A beautiful heart-breaking ballad, co-written by father and son Rhett Akins and Thomas Rhett.

It begins by sounding like a love song, but the words soon take a melancholy turn. It makes me think of how sometimes things end and taking the time to reminisce and reflect isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“Gonna fill up that old jukebox with all our favourite songs.”

Warmer

This is not a typical RF song, but a good one nonetheless. It has a great beat and lyrics that detail the struggles in a relationship.

“You think you’ll get hurt expecting the worst.”

Slip Away

A great, upbeat summer tune. Another RF song that puts a smile on your face. It encourages you to enjoy the sunshine while you can and take time to enjoy family and summer fun.

“Did someone say work? Naw, that’s a bad word when it’s sunny and 75.”

Through the Years

A beautiful cover of the original song made famous by the legend, the late Mr Kenny Rogers. The music sounds incredibly similar to another legend – Mr George Benson. I even had to Google it to see if it’s him that is playing on the track (it’s not!). The blend of the three voices on this track is simply outstanding. A touching tribute and the perfect way to end the EP.

“Can’t imagine anything the two of us can’t do.”

Overall review:

10/10

This is an remarkable EP – my only complain is that it isn’t a full album! ? (that’s the point of an EP I guess!). The sadness caused by their breakup has made me unreasonable in my wish of more RF songs!!

Please, please, please listen to this EP – even if you think you don’t like country music. It is a definite must-listen and another outstanding set of songs by one of my favourite bands.
